Update, June 11, 2009: Added the missing plugins.

Software upscaling dvdrip movies for your lcdtv.

What is upscaling?
Wiki article

Why do I need upscaling?
Dvdrip movies usually have 650X350 resolution, it looks good on crt displays. But if you played it in high resolution lcd displays it will look ugly. The picture must be processed to make it look better.

YOU NEED AT LEAST 2.2Ghz DUAL CORE PROCESSOR FOR SMOOTH PLAYBACK.

Step by step visual guide.

Download & Install the following...

1. AviSynth - Minimal install

2. FFDShow

Xvid & Vidx for dvdrips.

Uncheck all audio associations if you want to use AC3Filter.

3. Additional Avisynth Plugins:
EDITED, added missing plugins: http://www.sendspace.com/file/7uinlx
Just overwrite all files in the plugins folder. More files than the screenshot below.

Unpack and copy/paste...

Optional:
AC3Filter
MPC-HC

FFDShow Settings:

Create a new profile so that upscaling will only be done on an avi file.

Post processing...

Avisynth script... use 1280 for 720p or 1920 for 1080p. Included in the additional avisynth plugins.

Sharpen... Turn this off if you have MPC-HC sharpen shader turned on.

Remember to rearrange the filters by dragging.

Screenshot: Typical aXXo release upscaled to 720p.

After tinkering a lot with ffdshow, that's the best settings I had found.
Don't expect miracles on your dvdrips!
If you want quality, get a bdrip.

Tested on E4500 @ 2.4Ghz, 2GB dual channel, x1950pro, Windows XP updated.

There are DVD players that can upscale the video quality but still not near to 720 nor 1080 i , The best thing is download a blueray rip or other wise known as MKV. Then Buy a MKV player device like popcorn hour. Its cheaper than buying a blueray player. Then download all your HD movies on the internet ...

@Latency
Realtime ang upscaling. Karamihan na ng bagong dvd player at media tanks may upscaling. Para sa may mga HTPC itong guide na ito.

@duh.dong
Oks naman yung audio.

e4400 @ 2.4Ghz, 100% cpu usage. CPU intensive talaga upscaling. Kapag mabagal pc mo magkakaproblema talaga.

EDIT:

According to http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=465419

You can't use ffdshow in MCE.
